US expands sanctions on Syria

[31.08.2011 00:05]
US expands sanctions on Syria
The United States on Tuesday expanded its sanctions regime against Syria, targeting three top government officials, including the foreign minister and the ambassador to Lebanon, DPA reported.

US Treasury Under-secretary David Cohen said the sanctions aimed to bring "additional pressure (on) the entire Government of Syria" by singling out three "principle defenders" of the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and his crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators.

The three officials are Foreign and Expatriates Minister Walid Al-Moallem, presidential political and media advisor Bouthaina Shaaban and Syria's ambassador to Lebanon Ali Abdul Karim Ali.

Karim Ali was described as Syria's "primary link" to Lebanon, a key connection given long-standing allegations that Syria continues to interfere in Lebanon's internal politics. He has "maintained close ties to Syrian intelligence throughout his diplomatic career," the US Treasury said.

Earlier this month, the US slapped sanctions against the Commerical Bank of Syria and its Lebanese subsidiary, as well as the country's largest mobile phone provider, Syriatel.

Casey Anthony's pretrial hearings continuThe third day of pretrial hearings in the Casey Anthony trial ended with the judge  refusing to decide on some key elements
of the case
One thing he did weigh in on was whether or not Casey’s defense team can call a TV reporter as a witness in the case: no. The judge said reporters should not be subjected to “fishing expeditions”.
Other than that, the day was largely taken up with testimony from Casey’s family. The defense hopes to demonstrate that her parents were acting as “agents of the state” getting information from Casey when they visited her in in jail. If they can demonstrate that, they hope to keep some of her incriminating statements from surfacing in the trial.

The other big move forward in today’s hearing was an accord between the defense attorney and the lead prosecutor. The two had been sparring, and the prosecution had filed a motion asking the judge to find the defense in contempt. In the end, all it took to sort things out was an apology from the defense for personal insults. The two shook hands, and the motion was withdrawn. Hopefully as the trial moves forward they’ll be able to act like civil adults to one another.

Casey Anthony is on trial for the 2008 murder of her daughter, Caylee. If convicted, she faces the death penalty. Caylee was only 2 when she was killed. The trial is set to start in May.

Pakistan registered second victory of World Cup 2011 after crushing Sri Lanka by 11 runs in a nail-biting encounter on Saturday.

Chasing a total of 278, Sri Lanka side just managed to score 266/9 in their allotted quota of 50 overs.

Skipper Shahid Afridi once again-led from the front, scalping four crucial wickets in the match. Afridi also completed 300 wickets when he dismissed Sangakkara for 49. He bagged the second consecutive ‘Man of the Match’ award for splendid performance.

Sri Lankan openers provided cautious start to the home side but middle order failed to consolidate the innings.

Chamara Silva (57) and Sangakkara (49) put some brave face and took Sri Lanka close to the total.

Pakistan set 278 runs target before Sri Lanka to win the match.
Pak vs SL: Live

Once again Pakistan middle order made vital contribution to guide towards good total.

Younis Khan and Misbah-ul-Haq consolidated the Pakistani innings very well after dismissal of three batsmen. Misbah smashed second consecutive fifty was unbeaten for 82 runs. Younis Khan also scored fifty before dismissed by Rangana Herath.

For Sri Lanka, Perera and Herath took two wickets each while Mathews and Murlitharan claimed one wicket each.

Once Pakistan was looking to touch the 300 mark but Sri Lankan bowlers bowled well in death overs.

Sri Lanka haas a good batting side and they can chase this total. However, the highest defending total at this track is 280 and it seems that 278 will be good total.

Pakistan lost two wickets after good start against Sri Lanka. Hafeez was looking good when he threw his wicket during the huge mix-up. Hafeez scored 32 runs.
Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi won the crucial toss and decided to bat against Sri Lanka.
Pakistan has made no changes in the final XI. Sri Lanka has made two changes for today’s match. Chamara Kapugedera and Ajantha Mendis have paved the way for Chamara Silva and Rangana Herath in the side.

Shahid Afridi feels 270-280 total will be defendable on this track.

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka: Preview

Two heavyweights from Asia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, will lock horns in a Group A match to establish the supremacy in the sub-continent on Saturday.

The high-voltage encounter will be played at R Premadasa stadium in Colombo.

Both the teams have won their World Cup opener convincingly against minnows Canada and Kenya.

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka game is one of the much awaited clashes of World Cup 2011.

As far as advantage is concerned, Sri Lanka has definite edge over Pakistan as they will play under home crowd and support.

Sri Lanka is one of the favourites for the coveted trophy and they have been playing brilliant cricket for the past couple of years.

Sri Lanka is one of the most balanced sides in this World Cup. Sri Lanka has strong batting line up. All the batsmen, including Kumara Sangakkara, Tilakratne Dilshan, Mahela Jayawardene and Upul Tharanga Samaraveera, Chamara Kapugedera and Angelo Mathews are in good touch with the bat.

In the bowling department, Lasith Malinga-led pace battery can wreak havoc in the sub-continent while spin wizard Muttaiah Muralitharan and mystery bowler Ajantha Mendis can force any batsmen to dance to their tunes.

On the other hand, Pakistan side is dubbed as the dark horse of the tournament. They have performed brilliantly against Kenya. Sri Lanka vs Canada Live: Canada lose their first wicket on the first ball

Canada's Ruvindu Gunasekera and skipper Ashish Baghai are as the crease in their World Cup opener against Sri Lanka at the Mahinda Rajapaksha International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota on Sunday. Live Score

On the first ball of their innings Canada lost John Davison on 0 with Thisara Perera claiming his wicket, clean bowled.
Sri Lanka innings

Sri Lanka opener Mahela Jayawardene and skipper Kumar Sangakkara put on 179 runs for the third wicket as the hosts scored 332/7
Earlier, in a repeat of what happened during the India versus Bangladesh match, a horrible mix-up saw Sri Lanka opener Upul Tharanga walk back on 19. On Saturday it was Sachin Tendulkar and today it was Upul Tharanga who got run out on 19 when the Sri Lanka score was 63.

Then it was the turn of the second opener Tillakaratne Dilshan to take a walk. Dilshan holed out to deep cover off Rizwan Cheema and paid the price as John Davison claimed a fine catch. He fell for 50 and Sri Lanka fell to 88/2 in 20th over.

Post Dilshan's fall, Lankan opener Mahela Jayawardene and skipper Kumar Sangakkara got on to build a major partnership. The two played easily putting on 179 runs for the third wicket before Sangakkara fell to John Davison on 92. He missed his ton by eight runs as Davison took a fien catch off his own bowling.

However, Jayawardene managed to complete his ton. And no sooner did he complete it that he too fell. He got across the line and went for a big hit off Davison, but ended up giving a catch to Balaji Rao at shot fine leg. He got out for a 100 as Sri Lanka score read 276/4 in 44 overs.

Post Jayawardene's dismissal the Sri Lankans lost more wickets but kept the scoreboard ticking and finally they put on 332/7 in 50 overs.

Ton-up Jayawardene propels Sri Lanka to 332/7

Jayawardene|Kumar|Sri Lanka vs Canada|Mahela  Sangakkara
Jayawardene
HAMBANTOTA: Mahela Jayawardene hit his second World Cup hundred to lead Sri Lanka to 332/7 against Canada on Sunday in their opening Group A clash at the Mahinda Rajapakse stadium.

Scorecard

The 33-year-old right-hander scored his 100 off 80 balls for his 13th one-day hundred and added an invaluable 179 for the third wicket with skipper Kumar Sangakkara, who made 92.

Jayawardene and Sangakkara built on the platform set by opener Tillakaratne Dilshan (50) after Sri Lanka won the toss before a near-capacity 35,000 crowd at the new ground which became the 177th one-day venue.

Jayawardene completed his hundred with a single off spinner John Davison after facing just 80 deliveries - the fastest by a Sri Lankan in the World Cup, beating Sanath Jayasuriya's 85-ball ton against Bangladesh at Port of Spain four years ago.

But Davison dismissed him in the same over, caught at short fine-leg after Jayawardene had hit nine boundaries and a six.

Sri Lanka lost a cluster of wickets in the death overs, but Angelo Mathews (21) and Thilan Samaraweera (18 not out) ensured they got past 300.

Earlier, Dilshan and Upul Tharanga put on a quick 63 for the first wicket by the 12th over before a mix-up between the two sent Tharanga back, run out for 19.

Dilshan fell just after scoring his third World Cup half-century, holing out at deep cover to Davison as he failed to control a shot off medium-pacer Rizwan Cheema.

It was then left to Jayawardene and Sangakkara to punish a hapless Canadian attack, depleted by an injury to spearhead Henry Osinde who walked off the field due to a hamstring problem after bowling only 2.1 overs.

Jayawardene, who survived two caught behind referral appeals against spinner Jimmy Hansra, upped the tempo by hitting the same bowler for the first six at this ground.

He then clobbered four boundaries in successive overs from Davison, but the veteran Canadian broke the partnership by having Sangakkara caught and bowled, with the Sri Lankan captain approaching his 11th hundred.

Sangakkara hit seven fours and a six during his 87-ball knock.

Naked Cowboy getting dressed for court: Files lawsuit against CBS for 'Bold and the Beautiful' promo

Monday, February 14th 2011, 4:32 PM
The Naked Cowboy, whose real name is Robert John Burck, filed a lawsuit against CBS.
Handschuh/News
The Naked Cowboy, whose real name is Robert John Burck, filed a lawsuit against CBS.

The Naked Cowboy is singing the same old song, filing yet another lawsuit for a supposed ripoff of his guitar and skivvies shtick.
The litigation-loving tourist favorite filed a $1.5 million trademark infringement suit Monday against CBS, accusing the network of using a guitar-toting drunken fool in a cowboy hat and underwear to promote "The Bold and the Beautiful."
Robert Burck, who has performed as the Naked Cowboy since 1997 and often pops up in Times Square, is taking aim at CBS over an ad featuring a soap opera character named "Oliver," who he says is just a ripoff.

"The character, Oliver, sang a song - as is the Naked Cowboy's stock in trade, and he did so while appearing in Naked Cowboy signature garb," says the suit, which was filed in Manhattan Federal Court. "The depiction of the Naked Cowboy was that of a person who appeared drunk and sexually charged."

When it comes to lawsuits, this is hardly the Naked Cowboy's first time at the rodeo. Burck, who trademarked his act in 2000, previously sued the maker of M&Ms for dressing up a blue M&M in a white cowboy hat, cowboy boots and underpants.
He also filed sued against the Naked Cowgirl - a raunchy ex-stripper who starred in the "Sandy Kane Blew Show" on Manhattan public access television before taking to Times Square in a Naked

Cowboy-like getup.
Burck's latest lawsuit says CBS is cashing in on the good name and reputation he's built up with years of "guitar, good nature, personality, smile and gentle approach."
Oliver's boozy and sexually charged approach, the suit says, is anything but gentle or charming.

"Naked Cowboy had no control over the manner in which defendants depicted the Naked Cowboy in their segment," the suit says. "As a result of defendants' misappropriation, the distinctive qualities of Naked Cowboy were diluted."
CBS seemed unconcerned with the filing.
"We choose to respond with the bare minimum to the plaintiff's naked allegations," a CBS spokeswoman said.

| FoxNews.com
The most coveted magazine cover in the world - the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition- announced Monday that soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo's Russian girlfriend, Irina Shayk, will be its  2011's covergirl.
While the official unveiling took place on "The Late Show With David Letterman," the sexy cover featuring a sun-kissed Shayk in a pink and yellow halter-neck bikini, was reportedly leaked to the Twitterverse minutes before the taping. The New York City billboard was accidentally exposed, allowing time for a few cell phone snap shots, before quickly being covered up again.
Nonetheless, the stunning 25-year-old brunette (who has now appeared in the famed swimsuit edition five times, although this is her first cover) is well-deserving of her moment in the limelight
"There were 10 models there to do the Top 10 List, and nobody knows until the last minute who the cover will be," Shayk said. "And then I saw it, and I couldn't believe it."
Shayk's covers also include GQ Spain, GQ South Africa, and Elle Spain. She and Ronaldo have been item since 2010 after meeting through their Armani Exchange modeling duties.
Her regimen to get ready for the skimpy work doesn't really change from her normal beauty routine.
"I do work out five times a week, but I'm never dieting," Shayk said. "I try to be healthy because to be happy and healthy on the inside shows on the outside."
Other models in the running included last year's winner Brooklyn Decker. The issue hits newstands on Tuesday.

Caleb Hanie's Pack mentality

Monday, January 24, 2011

Maybe it's a good thing that the Chicago Bears and the Green Bay Packers only meet in the playoffs every 70 years. These two storied franchises apparently don't bring out the best in each other - at least not in January.
Each team played one strong half of football, just not the same half. The Packers took the first, the Bears the second, and when it was all over, Green Bay had a 21-14 victory, the NFC title and a trip to the Super Bowl to face the Pittsburgh Steelers.
But the Packers were nearly derailed by a 25-year-old quarterback out of Colorado State with three years of NFL experience, most of it holding a clipboard. Caleb Hanie came this close to being able to drink free in Chicago for life when he rallied the Bears to two fourth-quarter touchdowns and very nearly forced the game into overtime.
"You don't expect to play on a day like this, but that's how it goes sometimes," Hanie said.
Two interceptions, one for a touchdown by Green Bay nose tackle B.J. Raji - "one of those 'oops' type of things," Hanie said - the other on fourth and five with 47 seconds remaining, ended the Bears' hopes. Still, his performance - 13 of 20, 153 yards, a touchdown and a 65.2 rating - got him a lot of praise from both locker rooms. Hanie understood perfectly well just how unusual that is for a losing quarterback.
"Throw two picks," he said. "That's the only time you're going to get congratulations [for that], when they don't expect you to do anything."
Or when you follow two quarterbacks who were found wanting. The Bears (12-6) couldn't or wouldn't say when starter Jay Cutler hurt his knee, except that it happened at the end of the first half. Cutler said it was a hit to the outside of his knee. He played the first series of the second half and couldn't continue. "I knew that it was probably better that I didn't," he said. "I know my knee, I know my body."
His coach, Lovie Smith, became testy in defending Cutler, saying it was a decision by the doctors and trainers. Told that NFL players were questioning Cutler's injury on - where else? - Twitter, linebacker Brian Urlacher said, "Nothing like jealous people sitting around watching."

Perhaps. Cutler didn't come off the field limping or holding a leg. No one seemed certain about when the injury happened, although it shows up in the post-game stats as occurring when he was hit after throwing an interception to Sam Shields with 42 seconds remaining in the half. It's hard to imagine that a starting NFL quarterback wouldn't want to try to redeem himself in the second half after throwing just six completions for 80 yards and an interception - but it's telling that so many people in and out of Chicago were so ready to question his toughness.
Urlacher wasn't one of them. "Jay was hurt," he said. "He's tough as hell. He doesn't complain."
When Cutler went out and backup Todd Collins was ineffective in the next two series, Hanie got his chance. There were 57 seconds remaining in the third quarter, with the Packers leading, 14-0. Hanie drove the Bears 67 yards in eight plays to cut that lead in half. The Chicago faithful - increasingly subdued since cheering their way through the national anthem - finally got a chance to sing "Bear Down, Chicago Bears." For an encore, they belted out Bon Jovi's "Livin' on a Prayer" - with emphasis on one lyric in the chorus: "We're halfway there."

Jack LaLanne, fitness icon, dead at 96

Fitness icon Jack LaLanne, a man who pushed Americans to pump iron, eat better and lose weight for more than 70 years, has died. He was 96.
The so-called "godfather of fitness" died of respiratory failure from pneumonia in his Morro Bay, Calif. home Sunday afternoon, his longtime agent Rick Hersh told The Associated Press.
LaLanne was a fitness pioneer, opening the first of his many exercise studios in 1936. He focused on weight-training at a time when the idea of pumping iron was strictly taboo, especially for women.
"You have to understand that it was absolutely forbidden in those days for athletes to use weights. It just wasn't done. We had athletes who used to sneak into the studio to work out," he once said.
Athletic trainers believed bulking up would slow athletes down and women were supposed to look curvy and feminine, not athletic and toned.
"Back then, women weren't supposed to use weights. I guess I was a pioneer," LaLanne said.
LaLanne became a household name after he launched a televised exercise program in the 1950s that aired until the 1970s. He would forever after be known for his dedication to healthy living and his signature one-piece belted workout suit.
"This is a nation of tired people," he said, in an effort to encourage people to exercise. "Everyone is suffering from that chroinc disease that I like to call pooped-out-itis."
"Inactivity is a killer," LaLanne once said.  "The only way you can hurt the body is not use it."
LaLanne is survived by his wife and workout partner Elaine, his two sons Dan and Jon, and a daughter, Yvonne.
"I have not only lost my husband and a great American icon, but the best friend and most loving partner anyone could ever hope for," Elaine LaLanne said in a statement. The two had been married for 51 years.
